Full disclosure again: Taskaro is on this list and it's mine. I built a focus timer directly into a to-do app because I got tired of running two apps to do one thing, and I'm not going to pretend that's not the angle here. What follows is still the honest version, including where the dedicated timer apps below win.
1. Forest: Best for Gamified Motivation
Plant a tree, stay off your phone, watch it grow. Leave early and it dies. Forest's loop is simple and it works for a lot of people, especially anyone whose real problem is picking up their phone mid-task. It's free with in-app purchases for more tree species, plus a real-tree-planting tie-in for heavy users.
The catch: no task list. You type a label from memory each session, and there's no meaningful desktop or web experience.
Pick Forest if gamification is what actually keeps you off your phone.
2. Focus To-Do: Best for Pomodoro Purists
Focus To-Do pairs a full Pomodoro timer (work intervals, short breaks, long breaks, all configurable) with its own task list and detailed session statistics. It's mature, cross-platform, and its free tier is generous for a dedicated timer app.
The catch: it's still a second task list. Whatever you're actually planning around lives somewhere else, and now you're keeping two lists in sync by hand.
Pick Focus To-Do if you want deep Pomodoro customization and don't mind it doubling as your task manager.
3. Session: Best for Blocking Distractions
Session (Mac and iOS) pairs a clean timer with app and website blocking during a session, which neither Forest nor Taskaro do. If your actual problem is opening Twitter without deciding to, that blocking layer is worth paying for on its own.
The catch: Mac and iOS only, and it's a paid app after the trial. No task list integration.
Pick Session if you need hard blocking, not just a countdown.
4. Pomofocus: Best Completely Free, No-Account Option
Pomofocus is a browser tab. No signup, no app to install, just a Pomodoro timer with customizable work and break lengths. It's the fastest way to run one Pomodoro session with zero setup.
The catch: nothing persists in any meaningful way, and there's no task list, no stats history, no mobile app.
Pick Pomofocus if you want a timer for right now and nothing else.
5. Taskaro: Best for Not Running a Second App
Focus Mode picks up a task straight from your existing kanban board, no retyping. Choose 25 minutes or a custom length up to 8 hours, run a full-screen countdown with a progress ring, pause if you're interrupted. Free tier gives you 2 sessions a day; Pro removes the cap for $3.49 a month or $26.99 a year.
The catch, stated plainly: no phone or app blocking, no detailed session analytics, and 2 free sessions a day is tighter than most dedicated timer apps' free limits. If blocking or deep stats are the actual feature you need, pick Session or Focus To-Do above.
Pick Taskaro if your task list already lives there and you'd rather tap a task than type one.
The Comparison, Compressed
- Most motivating: Forest
- Most Pomodoro depth: Focus To-Do
- Best distraction blocking: Session
- Fastest to just start: Pomofocus
- Fewest apps to manage: Taskaro
How to Actually Choose
If blocking your phone is the real problem, get an app built for that, Session or Forest, not a to-do app with a timer bolted on. If you already keep a real task list somewhere and just want the timer attached to it instead of floating separately, that's the specific gap Focus Mode was built to close.
Try the one closest to your actual problem for a week. Not the one with the best marketing page, the one that matches the reason you stopped focusing in the first place.
